(Jun,7) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has announced that Pakatan Rakyat will not announce a shadow cabinet before GE13, even though it will win by “at least ten seats.” On the one hand, this is an admirable concession to reality; on the other, it is yet another sign that the Opposition pact cannot decide among themselves even the bare minimums of governance.
Let us begin with the admirable part of the statement, made at a dinner at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur this week. Anwar said that Pakatan won’t produce a Shadow Cabinet ahead of GE13 because it isn’t a widely-practised system in Malaysia. “It is difficult for us to name because we do not know which party gets what and how many seats,” he said. Instead, he argued, Pakatan has set up “shadow committees” tasked to take on a variety of specialised issues. -TC
