Teenage boy killed in Op Daulat – Lahad Datu
LAHAD DATU (March 10, 2013): A teenager was shot dead and a man in his 30s injured by security forces today while they were scouring Kampung Sungai Bilis, Tanjung Batu, about 5km from Kampung Tanduo, for the Sulu intruders.
The boy, aged between 12 and 15 years, has yet to be identified by the authorities.
Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said the security forces were following the Sulu intruders’ trail in Kg Sungai Bilis near Kg Tanjung Batu in the morning and detained a group of five people they came upon in the forest nearby.
“While they (security forces) were searching them, they heard a sound from a nearby bush. The security forces spontaneously opened fire in the direction (of the sound).
“Immediate checks found two people were shot. A 30-year old man was injured in the leg and the other, a boy of about 12-15 was dead,” he told a press conference at the Felda Sahabat 16 media centre.
Ismail said no weapons were found on them and investigations were ongoing to determine where the people in the forest came from.
“There were no documents on them, we will investigate their origins and what they were doing there,” he said, declining to elaborate.
He also warned people especially civilians not to come into the red zone as both sides were shooting non-stop since Saturday night.
Earlier, two security force members were injured in gunfire exchange with the intruders at Tanjung Batu.
Sabah police chief Datuk Hamza Taib said the security forces were attacked by a few militants who were holed up in Tanjung Batu, located about 5km from Kampung Tanduo in Lahad Datu, from 8pm on Saturday night to 4am yesterday morning.
“Both the injured are members of the PGA (General Operations Force) in Miri and are aged 25,” he said.
One was shot in the calf, while the other was shot in the thigh.
“They were sent to Sandakan after getting treatment from the medics here,” Hamza told a press conference today.
However, he said the casualties and injuries among the intruders could not be immediately determined as the security forces could not access the area yet.
Meanwhile, Ismail said the police detained six people believed to have links with the Sulu intruders in Semporna.
Four men were detained in Kg Perigi, Semporna while the other two were found in a field near KM 1.5 Jalan Semporna-Tawau today morning.
“All six were detained under the Security Offences (Special Measures) (Sosma) 2012 read together with the Penal Code . They are currently being investigated and believed to have links with terrorists,” he said. –Sun daily
