June 8, 2012: It was a tragic moment for a mother to find out that her son had died, apparently by committing suicide, inside his Myvi parked behind a shopping arcade in the city centre yesterday afternoon, after looking for him all night long.

The deceased was said to have not returned home throughout the whole night. Prior to the tragic discovery, the mother was doing some shopping when she spotted her son’s car parked behind the arcade at Jalan Merbau, Miri.

The deceased, identified as Lau, in his 30s, was initially suspected to be sleeping on the inclined driver’s seat with all the car’s windows closed.

Soon after the car’s door was open, the mother cried and hugged the body tightly. She was still hugging and crying over the body when paramedics from Miri Hospital arrived at the scene.

Her daughter and granddaughter then tried to console and persuade her to let go of the motionless body for the paramedics to examine.

Lau was pronounced dead at the scene by the paramedics.

In the course of investigation, the police found charcoal placed inside a container under the front passenger’s seat. The police also found a note written with ‘please call my mama’ and two numbers near the hand brake.

The police have classified the case as sudden death and ruled out any foul play. The body was later transferred to Miri Hospital mortuary pending post mortem to determine the cause of death.

The case is still under investigation.

The incident caused traffic to slow down along the road as crowds of curious people stopped and gathered at the scene. Personnel from the police and Rela helped to bring the traffic under control. – TBP
