JOHOR BARU  –  Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek has vowed to resign as MCA president if DAP wins big in Johor and is able appoint a non-Malay Muslim as menteri besar.

Dr Chua said he dared to make the statement because it would never happen, and described any notion of a Chinese DAP-appointed menteri besar as unrealistic.

“The opposition party is giving false hopes to the Chinese community to get more votes.

“If the Chinese were to vote for them, they will only be empowering PAS.

“Voters would not be replacing Barisan Nasional with DAP, but with PAS,” he said, referring to the state law which would require DAP to appoint a menteri besar from PAS if it were to come to power.

He was speaking to reporters prior to a New Year countdown at Taman Sutera Utama here on Monday night.

The opposition in Johor is currently represented by four DAP state assemblymen and one PAS state assemblyman in the 56-seat state legislature.

There are no Parti Keadilan Rakyat lawmakers in the state assembly.

Dr Chua said Johor would benefit most from Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s Economic Transformation Program and warned that it would come to a standstill if PAS were to take over Johor.

He said this could be seen in opposition-held states like Kelantan and Kedah.

Meanwhile, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, who was also at the event, said he was optimistic that PAS would be rejected by 90 per cent of Malays in the state.  –  NST
