GEORGE TOWN: Police have arrested a Filipino believed to be a member of a pickpocket gang preying on commuters on Rapid Penang buses.

The man was caught by Rapid Penang enforcement staff.

Rapid Penang creative communications manager Mohd Tajuddin Mohd Kassim said a driver had spotted six suspicious foreigners, including a woman, boarding his bus at the Komtar bus interchange on Wednesday afternoon.

The driver alerted two enforcement officers in a Rapid Penang car who then followed the bus.

He said the group, believed to be Indonesians and Filipinos, sensed that they were being tracked and they alighted at a bus stop near the Telekom office in Jalan Burma. The bus was on its way to Batu Ferringhi.

“Our officers approached them and they started to run away.

“One staff gave chase and caught up with one gang member shortly afterwards,” he said.

NST reported that Tajuddin said there was a minor scuffle before the one enforcement unit member overpowered the suspect and later handed him over to the police.

He said Rapid Penang commuters had lodged several complaints about frequent pickpocketing.

Northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Gan Kong Meng confirmed the arrest of the suspect in his 30s.
