KUALA LUMPUR  –  A gang responsible for 10 cases of robbery and car theft in Sentul alone, was busted last Friday when the mastermind and three accomplices were nabbed arrested in Kepong.

Sentul police chief Assistant Commissioner Zakaria Pagan said the gang had been active since the middle of last year when the mastermind was released from prison.

Police recovered numerous stolen items including branded handbags and wallets, mobile phones, smart tags and four vehicles, namely a BMW, Kia Spectra, Perodua Myvi and a Honda CRV.

Zakaria said police received a tip-off last Friday that the suspects were spotted in a restaurant in Kepong. A raiding party went to the restaurant at about 11.30pm and nabbed four men between the ages of 30 and 40.

“The suspects led the police party to a Honda CRV where they found a .38 revolver with two bullets in the chamber.

They also seized a bag containing all the stolen items and various tools,” he said.

It was learnt that the four suspects tested positive for drug abuse. Three of them have previous convictions and had also been detained under preventive law.

Zakaria said the group would normally target victims who drove luxury cars.

Once the victim arrived home and was preparing to enter the house compound, the gang would rush into the premises. They would grab the victim’s personal belongings and vehicle.

The suspects would then park the stolen vehicle in low-cost flats to avoid detection by authorities and change the registration plate. It was also learnt that they normally sold their loot and vehicles cheaply to sustain their drug habit.

Zakaria said there were several reports where the gang was alleged to have threatened their victims with the gun. They have been remanded until Thursday to facilitate investigations.  – nst
