Nelson Mandela – A Fighter
South Africa – Nelson Mandela, the global icon and former South African leader, is doing “very, very well” and continues to be treated at a Pretoria hospital, officials said Monday.
Doctors are going to perform more tests on Mandela, said Defense Minister Nosiviwe Noluthando Mapisa-Nquakula, who spoke to journalists outside the 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria.
The office of President Jacob Zuma noted online that Monday is a special day because Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize on December 10, 1993, for his “selfless contribution to the struggle for liberation, human rights and justice in South Africa.”
The medical team is assured of our support as they look after and ensure the comfort of our beloved founding president of a free and democratic South Africa,” Zuma said over the weekend.
Mandela’s medical issue is “consistent with his age,” Zuma said.
Mandela spent 27 years in prison as retribution for fighting racial segregation in South Africa. He became president in 1994, four years after he was freed. – CNN
