Deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s suggestion that UMNO’s counterpart MCA did not understand the Chinese electorate has been met with a strong reaction by the Chinese-only party.

MCA deputy president Liow Tiong Lai has been quoted as saying that Muhyiddin should be more sensitive, and said the Chinese community only demanded for fair policies.

“So I believe Muhyiddin must have understood this idealism. He as deputy prime minister must defend all people, and not just the Malays. If he understands this theory, he will not ask why MCA doesn’t understand the Chinese,” Liow reportedly told online news portal Merdeka Review.

According to Liow, MCA was putting efforts to dismantle unfair policies, thanking prime minister Najib Razak for introducing the 1Malaysia concept which he described as inclusive.

Speculation that Muhyiddin was eyeing Najib’s post was fuelled earlier this week after the former called for elections to be held this year, in contrast to Najib’s plan to sit out the full five-year term.

PAS vice president Mahfuz Omar said Muhyiddin was trying to oust Najib by hoping that Najib would not be able to deliver BN’s two-third majority and thus suffer the fate of his predecessor Abdullah Ahmad Badawi who was forced to quit.
