Mark Zuckerberg‘s college roommate Samyr Laine competes in Olympics
Laine, who was born in the U.S. of Hatian parents, visited the country for the first time in 2010 following the earthquake there that killed 300,000. Laine is one of five athletes representing Haiti in the Olympics this year. Haiti hasn’t won a medal since 1928.
The 28-year-old Laine faces some tough competition. In the qualifying rounds, Laine leaped 16.81, making him number 10 on the list of athletes competing in the event. Number one is Christian Taylor of the U.S. with 17.21. However, Laine’s personal best in the event is 17.39 meters. The triple jump is scheduled for 2:20 pm EST.
Zuckerberg, who has watched his company’s market capitalization and his personal wealth fall since Facebook’s IPO in May, has cheered on Laine via Facebook. “He was always incredibly hard working and serious, both as a student and as an athlete,” Zuckerberg wrote in a recent status update. “He’s also just a really nice guy.” As a Harvard freshman, Laine shared a room with Zuckerberg. Laine was also the 14th person to join Facebook.
