Malays are power hungry (might end up like Syria) – Dr. Mahathir
BALING: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said some pockets of Malays were disunited despite efforts by the Government to boost the development of the community
The former prime minister blamed the problem on some quarters who were power-hungry.
“There are pockets of disunity among the Malays.
NST reported that “This is simply because some quarters are actually out to destroy the unity but are lying to the community by claiming they were the champions of the race,” he said at the ‘Ihsan Ramadan and Aidilfitri’ programme here today.
Dr Mahathir, who did not name the errant quarters, said unless the matter was tackled, Malaysians could face the same fate as the Syrians.
“Syria is in chaos because there are many tribes and groups among the people.
“We may share the same fate if we don’t pull ourselves together and strengthening the unity among us,” he said.
He said although Malays make up 60 per cent of the country’s population, the community was split into three groups.
“They are disunited because of differing political affiliation and ideologies.
“We are also disunited because some power-hunger groups and individuals are out to destroy the unity that Malays have long enjoyed,” he said.
He later gave away duit Raya to some 2,400 orphans, single mothers and the poor and needy, compliments of 1Malaysia Development Bhd, before joining some 6,400 people to break their fast.
