JOHOR BARU – An Indonesian woman was allegedly beaten up with a hockey stick and a ladle by her employers, in what is believed to be the first case of maid abuse since the republic lifted a ban on domestic helpers in December last year.

The 24-year-old woman, known only as Marsini, was warded at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital here after “fleeing” from her employers on Sunday.

Marsini said she came to Malaysia nine months ago and was posted to work as a maid with a couple in Taman D’Utama.

“Not long after, the husband and wife started hitting and abusing me.

“They got angry over minor things and said my cooking was bad,” she told reporters at the hospital yesterday.

The woman said she ran away from the house and sought the help of a friend to lodge a police report on the assaults.

Senai assemblyman Ong Kow Meng, who visited the victim at the hospital, said what happened to Marsini was “tragic and unacceptable”.

He has brought up the matter to the Indonesian consulate here.
