LANGKAWI  –  Former national hurdles star Ishtiaq Mubarak was charged with two counts of drug possession at the magistrate’s court here today.

Ishtiaq or his real name, Ishtiaq Ahmad Mubarak Ahmad pleaded guilty to all the charges before magistrate Azem Fatihi Kamal.

The 64-year-old former national athlete pleaded guilty to possessing 37.9g of cannabis at the yatch academy in Jalan Padang Mat Sirat, Kuah, here at about 1am on Sunday.

He was charged under Section 39A ( 1 ) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which carries the maximum five years’ jail and five strokes of the rotan.

Ishtiaq, who was unrepresented, was also charged under Section 6 of the same act for possessing 5.53g of cannabis at the same place, time and date.

Azem Fatihi set bail at RM5,000 in one surety and fixed Feb 17 for mention pending chemical reports in connection with the case.

Deputy public prosecuted Nurfarhana Ahmad prosecuted. Ishtiaq later posted bail.  –  NST
