KOTA TINGGI  –  A couple with their son have been found dead in their home in Kampung Jawa in Pengerang here, believed to have committed suicide by inhaling smoke.

Both the 57-year-old wife and the couple’s 20-year-old son were diagnosed with having Down Syndrome.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Che Mahazan Che Aik said a neighbour who smelled smoke coming from the house had alerted the police at around 10am yesterday.

“When we went to the house, we found the bodies of two men and a woman in a bedroom. We believe that the family might have burnt something and suffocated themselves to death by inhaling smoke,” he said.

The 67-year-old husband, added Supt Che Mahazan, had earlier told his neighbour that he wanted to kill himself and his family because they were living in poverty.

“Initial investigations showed that there was no evidence of criminal intent in the house,” he said, adding that all the bodies were sent to the Kota Tinggi Hospital for a post-mortem.

The case had been classified as sudden death.

On another matter, a man trying to steal copper wires in a school slipped and fell to his death.

Supt Che Mahazan said a gardener stumbled upon the body of the man, who was in his 30s, in SK Tun Dr Syed Nasir in Felda Pasak here at around 7.15am yesterday.

“Investigations show that the man had gone to the school to steal copper wires. He slipped and fell from the school’s three-storey building,” said Supt Che Mahazan.
