KUALA LUMPUR  –  It is a bleak Christmas celebration for a single mother whose flat at Flat Sri Kelantan, Sentul was destroyed in a fire, today.

K. Gerjarani, 52, said her 27-year-old daughter and herself were not at home when she was informed about the fire at her unit on the 16th floor during the 11am incident.

“I had gone for breakfast but rushed home upon receiving the call. No items could be saved,” she told reporters at the flat where she has been staying for the past 20 years.

Gerjarani, who works as a clerk at a private clinic, said the fire also killed her two cats

“I don’t care about the house. I can look for another house, but I am sad to lose my cats,” said Gerjarani, who was wearing a traditional Punjabi dress in conjunction with the Christmas celebration.

Gerjarani estimated her losses to be around RM20,000.

Meanwhile, a neighbour, Zaitun Safi, 58, said she became aware of the fire when she saw smoke coming from the kitchen of the ill-fated flat.

“I immediately contacted my neighbour. Neighbours tried to break down her door while waiting for her to reach home but to no avail. I contacted the Fire and Rescue Department for help,” the houswife said.

In the meantime, Federal Territory Fire and Rescue Department Headquarters senior operations commander Sulaiman Tan Abdullah said, 35 firemen from Sentul, Chow Kit and Gombak rushed to the scene after receiving a call at 11.05am.

The cause of fire and actual losses incurred were still being investigated, he said. Bernama
