KUALA LUMPUR (May 3, 2012): Rasah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy head, R. Tangam, pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to two counts of violating a Magistrate’s Court order barring the Bersih 3.0 rally at Dataran Merdeka last April 28.

Tangam, as a participant in a gathering which was against the law, is charged with violating a court’s order barring the public, participants and organiser of the Bersih 3.0 gathering from being at Dataran Merdeka last April 28.

The charge, under Section 143 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum imprisonment for six months, or fine, or both, if found guilty.

Tangam, 50, a former soldier, also pleaded not guilty to an alternative charge of, together with the “Gabungan Pilihanraya Bersih dan Adil” (Bersih 3.0) supporters, violating Magistrate Zaki Asyraf Zubir’s order by attending the rally on that day.

The alternative charge is made under Section 188 of the Penal Code which carries an imprisonment for up to a month, or fine of up to RM400, or both, upon conviction.

Tangam is charged with committing both the offences at Jalan Raja Laut here at about 3pm on April 28. Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Hanapiah Zakaria urged the court to set bail at RM5,000 with one surety.

Lawyer Latheefa Koya, representing Tangam, in asking for a lower bail, said her client, whose wife is a housewife, was jobless and had six children.

Judge Mahmud Abdullah set bail at RM2,000 with one surety and fixed June 5 for mention. – Bernama
