Baby boy hit and killed by an ambulance
June 10, 2012 – A 3-year-old boy was mowed down and killed last night by an ambulette in Brooklyn, authorities and his family said.
Kevin Rodriguez was hit after he ran out of a laundermat at about 7:45 p.m. and into the vehicle’s path on West 15th Street near Neptune Avenue in Coney Island.
His mother, Feizy Marcos, 24, saw the car coming and tried to avoid the accident.
“Stop!” she screamed.
But it was too late.
“He hit him and he was under the car,” said Luis Peregine, 15, a family member. “And she saw he was still trying to get up. And she kept telling him to stop and then he moved and she said the wheel went over his head. The back wheel went over his neck.”
Witness Matthew Rennick, 20, said, “I just saw the child facedown in the street, with blood all over the place.”
Kevin’s heartbroken father, Octavio Rodriguez, 24, cradled the bloody tot in his arms as the ambulette driver stood nearby with his head in his hands, witnesses said.
Police are continuing to investigate the accident, but there’s no criminality suspected.
“Kevin was just a sweet and innocent little thing. He never did nothing bad to anybody,” said the boy’s cousin, Rosario Rodriguez, 22.
“There are no words that can express what we are feeling right now.”
The tiny victim was rushed to Coney Island Hospital in critical condition but later pronounced dead.
His grieving parents and relatives had gathered in the emergency room lobby before making a solemn return to their West 16th Street home, where some brought food and flowers to mourn little Kevin.
”It is just too much for them,” said Rosa Rodriguez, one of the boy’s aunts. “They are hurting so bad. They cannot speak now.”
