June 24, 2012 – Sleeping alone at the back of the bus, the schoolgirl seemed vulnerable to the molester.

Seizing his opportunity, Malaysian Tan Meng Long, 30, a technician, moved in and, under the cover of a newspaper, touched her breast.

Yesterday, Tan, a Singapore permanent resident, was jailed six months for molesting the then-13-year-old student on an SBS Transit bus on Oct 4, 2010.

The court heard that the victim had boarded bus service 53 at a bus stop near Meridian Junior College in Pasir Ris and was on her way to school.

In her school uniform, she sat on the extreme right, next to the window, in the last row of seats.

When the bus reached Hougang, Tan boarded it.

He also occupied the last row of seats and sat in the middle.

He moved over and sat beside the girl while she was still awake and molested her when she dozed off.

The bus was travelling along Lorong Ah Soo at about 8am when Tan molested the girl.

He alighted shortly at a bus stop near Serangoon Bus Interchange.

When the traumatised victim reached school, she told her classmates about the incident and the matter was reported to the disciplinary mistress.

Her mother was also informed and a police report was lodged.

Tan was arrested on Oct 28 that year.

In his mitigation, Tan said that he had undergone surgery four years ago and requested to be spared the cane.

His boss and wife also pleaded with the judge for a fine and not to send him to jail.

His wife said that she found out about the incident only after Tan was charged last month.

She has since forgiven him.

She was worried about their 19-month-old son as it was Tan who took care of their child.

She described Tan as a good father and husband.

He could have been jailed up to two years, fined, caned or received any of the combined punishments. – The New Paper
